Major works from Bonhams & Goodmans April Auctions on View in Sydney

Important Art, Fine Furniture and Decorative Arts

Highlights from the Australian, International and Aboriginal Fine Art Auction to be held on Monday 23 April include an important work by Albert Tucker (1914-1999) titled Flirtation, 1954 which has never before been offered for sale (est. $120,000 – 180,000), a wonderful oil on board by Clifton Pugh titled A Feral Cat, 1957 (est. $60,000-80,000) which was in the Antipodean Exhibition, Victorian Artists’ Society, Melbourne, 1959 and originally purchased by John and Sunday Reid for the Museum of Modern Art of Australia, and a melancholy painting by Arthur Boyd titled Potter by His Kiln, 1969 (est. $120,000 – 150,000) depicting his father Merric Boyd, the father of Australian pottery, resting beside his kiln waiting for it to fire.

Also on view are works by artists including Howard Arkley, Brett Whitely, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Charles Blackman, Fred Williams and John Coburn to name a few. Works from the corporate collection of Abbott Tout Lawyers will be on view including Arthur Boyd’s Bird at Shoalhaven, 1988 (est. $80,000-120,000) and Charles Blackman’s The Dreamer’s Room, 1967 (est. $70,000-90,000).

Collectors of decorative arts and fine furniture will not be disappointed. The pieces on display are standouts. Items include The Governor Collins’ pepper caster, the earliest recorded piece of Australian silver made in 1805 to commemorate the birthday of King George III (estimate upon request), the Governor Collins’ Australian blackwood and cedar tea caddy circa 1805, probably by James Grove (est. $60,000-80,000), a fine Regency rosewood and boulle inlaid centre table by George Bullock circa 1820 (est. $70,000-100,000) and an important pair of George II carved mahogany library chairs (est. $100,000-120,000).

Also on view are some wonderful Asian objects including some outstanding pieces of porcelain and a large Chinese very finely cast bronze figure of Buddha Shakyamuni, Ming, 17th century (est. $70,000 – 100,000).

Both Geoffrey Smith, National Head of Art, and James Hendy, National Head of Decorative Arts, will be available for consultation throughout the viewings along with their highly-qualified teams of specialists.
