Garden Glory at Bonhams This June

Published April 23rd, 2007

This summer, the glory of the garden comes to London as Bonhams prepares to hold its inaugural Garden Sale at 101 New Bond Street on 6 June 2007. The auction will include works of art and artefacts of horticultural interest from a cross-section of disciplines, including pictures, prints, ceramics, glass, books, furniture, garden statuary, silver, objet d’art and antique tools.

The sale is being co-ordinated by Camilla Seymour, a Departmental Director at Bonhams, and George Plumptre of Bonhams’ Chairman’s Office, who was for several years the Gardening Correspondent for The Times newspaper, founder of ‘Greenfingers,’ and the author of numerous critically-acclaimed books on the finest gardens of Great Britain and Europe.

“Our aim here is to produce a sale with a diversity of works where the focus is on plants, gardening and famous figures in garden history,” explained George Plumptre. “The single factor governing the sale will be that all lots celebrate or illustrate one or more of these key areas, whether it be through accurate representation such as a botanical drawing or a piece of porcelain, or impressionist depiction such as a piece of inlaid furniture.”

Highlights already consigned to the sale include:

Octave Guillonet, ‘The artist’s wife in their garden,’ £8,000 – 12,000
Alison Arnegger, ‘Garden Splendor’, £4,000 – 6,000
A Coalport botanical dessert service circa 1805, £2,500 – 3,000
W Savage Cooper, ‘View from a Garden’, £2,000 – 3,000
A cherub lead fountain, £1,500 – 2,000
A terracotta garden bowl by Liberty, £500 – 700
A Victorian silver cased spade and fork, £250 - 300
A collection of silver prize cups from the Eastbourne Horticultural Society
The sale is set to become a firm favourite in London’s auction calendar.
