Wednesday 23 May 2007, Bonhams became the first international auction house in the world to hold a sale dedicated to South African art outside of South Africa. Enthusiastic bidders packed the saleroom at Bonhams in London, 101 New Bond Street as three world record prices were smashed by some of the country’s major artists. The work of Indian and Pakistani artists made record prices at Bonhams, the international fine art auction house in London yesterday (21st May 2007). A packed saleroom saw fierce bidding for work by Jamini Roy (India 1887 -1972), Sadequain (Pakistan 1937-87), Sakti Burman (India born 1935) and Jamil Naqsh (Pakistan born 1939). All broke their existing top prices to establish new world records for these artists. An exceptionally rare and painted Wythe County, Va., blanket chest, crafted around 1800 and in a remarkable state of preservation, sold for $99,000 in a sale of Southern furniture, pottery and folk art held May 12 by Case Antiques. The sale was held at the Knoxville Convention & Exhibition Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Prices quoted include a 10% buyer’s premium. The chest was the top lot in the sale.
