Bonhams & Butterfields to Offer California & American Paintings and Sculpture
August sale to feature works of E. Charlton Fortune, Maynard Dixon, Granville Redmond, Edgar Payne and John Marshall Gamble, among others.
Bonhams & Butterfields, California’s oldest and largest fine arts auctioneers, has established a reputation as a preeminent source for California and American works of art at auction. The next sale of California and American Painting and Sculpture will held on August 7, 2007. The auction will feature a wide variety of important Western scenes, Plein Air, Society of Six, and land and cityscapes by established American artists including: John Marshall Gamble, E. Charlton Fortune, William Keith, Maynard Dixon, Alson Skinner Clark; Granville Redmond and Edgar Payne.
John Marshall Gamble’s Wild Heliotrope near Laguna Beach is an exquisite example of his bright palette and California wildflower subject matter — admired and recognized by collectors nationally. From a private collector, the painting was acquired from the artist and had remained by descent within a family. The oil on board work is signed and inscribed by the artist and is expected to bring $100,000 to $150,000.
An impressionist work titled Mending Nets (est. $80/120,000) by international award winning female artist E. Charlton Fortune is also on offer. Possibly using the ‘E.’ to disguise her gender early in her career, Euphemia Charlton Fortune is best known for her work in the genres of landscape, portrait and religious compositions. The rarity of her works in the open market makes this lovely composition particularly desirable and important.
Additional sale highlights for the August auction include: two colorful works from 1911 by Granville Redmond – A Field of California Poppies (est. $150/250,000) and Moonlight Reflections (est. $60,000-80,000); Lake in the Sierras by Edgar Payne (est. $100/150,000); a signed and inscribed canvas entitled Scene near Munich by William Keith (est. $80/120,000); Alson Skinner Clark’s 30 x 38inch work Bridge Builders (est. $100/150,000) and American master Maynard Dixon’s noted western scene Toward Arizona (No. 520) expected to bring as much as $80,000.
Simulcast between salesrooms in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the August 7 sale will feature a series of breath-taking views — landscapes and seascapes, portraiture and genre scenes. Each sale brings spirited bidding with a number of record prices routinely being set for California and American artists.
The illustrated auction catalog for the August sale will be online at www.bonhams.com/us in the weeks preceding the sale and its previews open in San Francisco on July 27-29 and in Los Angeles on August 3-5, 2007.
