Bonhams & Butterfields September Fine Jewelry and Watches Auction Opens Fall Season
AuctionPublicity.com – More than 400-lots of diamond, platinum and gold jewelry and watches were offered and sold in the first jewelry sale of the Fall 2007 auction season at Bonhams & Butterfields, held on 17 September, 2007. Bidders assembled in the San Francisco and Los Angeles salesrooms, as well, participated via telephone from around the globe. This jewelry sale was the first of four planned for the US between September and the end of year.
The top lot of the day was a classic lady’s diamond and platinum covered wristwatch. Covered from end to end with 11.25-carats of sparkling diamonds, the piece measured six-inches in overall length and surpassed its high estimate, selling for $8,400. According to Specialist Michael Larsen, the bidding and interest exemplifies the ever-growing demand for unique fine diamond jewelry.
A bidding battle ensued for a diamond and 14-karat gold brooch which sold for $7,200 (est. $4/5,000) and unrelenting bidding pushed the price for two lovely 22-karat gold chains by designer Jean Mahie. The pieces bear a Mahie signature, and sold for $6,600.
Collectors and members of the trade vied throughout the day’s two session sale for beautiful pieces from private collections and estates from across the country, with such noted designers as Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Mauboussin and Rolex represented. The sale’s late session featured timepieces and watches, with pocket watches and rare examples by prominent makers offered.
Sales of jewelry and timepieces will continue at Bonhams & Butterfields on 18 October and 17 December 2007. Fine watches and wristwatches will be offered on 6 December.
In October, the international auctioneers will offer multiple diamond-adorned tiaras and property fresh to market from estates and private collections (see October’s press release at www.bonhams.com/press). The firm’s December Fine Jewelry sale comprises nearly 200-lots highlighted by a highly desirable French diamond and platinum rivière necklace which features 41 diamonds of varying weights (see December’s press release at www.bonhams.com/press ).
