Heritage Sets New Record for Sales of Peanuts Original

Heritage Auction Galleries set a new world record for the sale of a Charles Schulz original Peanuts strip in their most recent Vintage Comic and Comic Art auction, held on November 15 & 16, 2007, in Dallas, Texas. The baseball-themed Sunday page, dated April 10, 1955, realized $113,525, which includes a 19.5% Buyer’s Premium.

“This particular piece is the first Peanuts original ever to sell in the six-figure range,” said Ed Jaster, Vice-President for Dallas-based Heritage. “The demand for Schulz Peanuts art has been steadily growing over the last several years, as can easily be seen by a review of our auction results for this material. In the last 6 years, Heritage has sold 61 Peanuts dailies and 30 Peanuts Sundays, more than all other auctioneers combined, and we currently auction about 60% of the Charles Schulz art that appears in the public auction market.”

“Schulz art is extremely popular among Heritage’s clientele,” Jaster continued. “Despite the steep rise in prices, we always have dozens of collectors, or more, ready to bid on the right Peanuts pieces whenever they come up for auction. We’re extremely pleased to see that, even seven years after this beloved artist’s death, interest in his work continues to increase among both experienced collectors and the general public.”

“There were several themes that Schulz revisited throughout the history of his landmark strip,” Jaster said, ” and one of the most popular was baseball. Through the years, Charlie Brown and his team must have played hundreds of games, with eventual victory remaining forever elusive. This is, of course, a very early example – the strip was only five years old at the time – of a theme that would reoccur many times.”

“Overall, this was a very strong auction for Schulz art,” said Jaster, “with a total of nine pieces – eight dailies and a Sunday – realizing a total of $279,630. Prices like these are a testament to the enduring popularity of this iconic artist, whose simple, heartfelt vision is still cherished by millions of people worldwide.”

Heritage’s next Vintage Comic and Comic Art auction will be held February 27-29, 2008, in Dallas, Texas.
