Important New Zealand Works of Art

. December 21, 2007

As auction festivities draw to a close and Christmas festivities begin, Webb’s would like to thank all who have taken part in our events this year.

The final sales of the Webb’s calendar provided some excellent results. Whilst several of the higher value works in the sale were sold conditionally on the night, in a catalogue containing many quality works
it is positive that nearly every major painting has subsequently sold.

0056.jpgPerhaps the most outstanding result of the night came in the record price achieved for Dick Frizzell’s Bordello in the Congo: Phantom Tales 3 which flew up to $65,000, well surpassing the estimate of $40,000 – $50,000 and the large Dick Frizzell titled McCahon Diptych also sold subsequent to the sale at $60,000.

Lot 56, Dick Frizzell
Bordello in the Congo: Phantom Tales 3
Achieved $65,000

The small but exquisite Colin McCahon waterfall painting entitled A Constant Flow of Light well exceeded its estimate of $40,000 – $60,000 selling for $65,000 and a fine, small Charles Goldie portrait depicting Kapi Kapi sold for $135,000 against a low estimate of $100,000. Both works by Michael Parekowhai sold very well with the c-type print Elmer Keith selling for $4,600 and the light box The Bosom of Abraham achieving $9,200.

Tony Fomison’s magnum opus, The Over Seer #104 achieved $145,000, whilst Requiem by Ralph Hotere achieved $75,000. McCahon’s Canterbury Landscape achieved $130,000 and the scroll painting by McCahon I te Puke achieved $95,000. Brenda in New Zealand, a work on paper, also by McCahon, from the North Otago series achieved $47,500. Gretchen Albrecht’s Sky Edge sold for $30,000 and Peter Siddell’s Mt Eden, Mangere sold for $40,000. Full sale results will be published in the April catalogue.

A selection of small works by the Australian artist Pro Hart exceeded expectations with To an Old Mate boldly striding past the estimate of $3,000 – $5,000 to a remarkable $9,250. Aboriginals Hunting Kangaroo also sold well at $6,300, comfortably sitting above the expectation of $4,000 – $6,000.
