Bonhams Makes Opening Gambit to Tackle International Chess and Games Market by Appointing White Knight

PUBLISHED 15 February 2008

The Directors of Bonhams are delighted to announce that Luke Honey has been appointed to the new role of Chess and Games Consultant. He will hold two sales a year in Knightsbridge, London – the first to be held on 13 May 2008.

Luke Honey, who holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Medieval & Modern History and is a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, has worked within the fine arts and auction world since 1991. He began working life as a Porter, firstly for Bonhams and then shortly afterwards for Phillips. In 1993, he progressed to become European Works of Art specialist, specifically taking responsibility for Chess and Games sales – including the Ernst Boehlen Collection – in both London and New York until 2001.

He has since held a number of Chess and Games Consultancy positions for several other auction houses on both sides of the Atlantic, mounted several exhibitions, contributed articles to publications and produced a screenplay.

“At Bonhams, we are committed to providing our customers with the best quality specialised sales we can and by adding Chess and Games to our existing sales portfolio, we’ve added a new dimension to what we can offer our clients,” says Jon Baddeley, Bonhams’ Director of Collectables. “I’m delighted to welcome Luke Honey to the Collectors team. He has a great depth of knowledge and passion on the subject of chess and other traditional board games.”

Bonhams’ Chess and Games Sales, which will be held this year on 13 May and 14 October, will feature:
European, Russian, Chinese and Indian chess sets and related antiquarian prints and boards
Mah Jong sets
Draught and backgammon sets
Playing and Tarot cards
Gambling chips and games
Magic apparatus, sets, posters, and prints
