ABC TV Star Cars for Auction
Two much loved classic cars with a common ABC TV connection will again be in the spotlight at Shannons Sydney Summer Classic Auction on Monday (February 18).
The black 1955 Morris Minor Tourer Series II that Arthur Beare (aka actor Garrry McDonald) drove in the popular ABC television comedy series ‘Mother and Son’ is going under the hammer with no reserve price.
Meanwhile a carefully-restored Mandarin Red 1975 Holden Sandman Panelvan will be filmed during the auction for a segment on the current ABC TV series ‘Collectors’ as a prime example of appreciating 1970s pop culture.
Collectors’ host Andy Muirhead and former Skyhooks lead guitarist Red Symons will host the segment for a future programme.
The ‘Mother and Son’ Morris Minor has already aroused considerable interest around Australia, with a number of floor and telephone bidders already registered with Shannons.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation purchased the vehicle specifically for the TV series, in which it played an on-going tragic role as Arthur’s car, constantly breaking down and further thwarting his attempts to bring dates back to the family home.
Following the completion of the series, the ABC placed the car in underground storage for a number of years before deciding to sell it through Shannons.
Morris Minor Tourers are relatively rare in Australia, with all examples fully imported, adding to their collectable value.
According to Shannons, the ‘Mother and Son’ car remains in generally good condition, with very good paint and bodywork and a tidy interior and is expected to sell with no reserve price in the $7,000-$12,000 range.
The 1975 Holden Sandman being auctioned by Shannons is a top example of an Australian icon that symbolises the 1970s, with its inseparable association with the free-living surf culture of the day.
The HJ-series model being auctioned on Monday was originally an Adelaide car and was built with the 4.2 litre V8 engine and automatic transmission. It was the subject of a comprehensive body, interior and mechanical restoration between 2005 and 2008, with the only non-original parts being the GTS side mirrors and Genie extractors.
Because of its exceptional condition and collectable value, Shannons are predicting a selling range from $24,000-$30,000 – around four times the original new cost of a Holden panel van with the Sandman option package.
Shannons Sydney Summer Classic Auction featuring 26 vehicle and 17 memorabilia lots will be held on Monday (February 18) starting at 7.00pm. All lots can be viewed over the weekend at Shannons Sydney showroom, Unit B, 12 Frederick St, St.Leonards from 9.00am-4.00pm Saturday and Sunday.
