Important Adelaide Auction May 12

On Monday 12 May at 6pm, Bonhams & Goodman’s Adelaide office will conduct a large auction of some 360 lots of antique furniture, paintings, oriental and Persian carpets, New Guinean artefacts, silver, jewellery and porcelain. The auction also includes items under instructions from the vendors of a North Adelaide historic mansion.

The sale features something for collectors at all ends of the spectrum and across all categories.

ricketts.jpgAustralian pottery collectors in particular will be delighted by a wonderful selection of pieces by William Ricketts (1899-1993). Ricketts is best known for his hand-modelled ceramic sculptures and vessels with modelled heads and figures of Aborigines.

A strong Aboriginal rights activist and conservationist, he left a sanctuary in Victoria’s Mount Dandenong Ranges to the general public after his death which features a wonderful selection of his creations.

The three Ricketts lots have estimates as follows: Lot 281 Important William Ricketts Coffee Pot depicting the artist himself as the lid to the rusticated log form ‘pot’ estimate $2,000 – 3,000; Lot 279 A Ricketts Clay head portraying the artist himself $100-200; Lot 280 A Ricketts pottery head of an aboriginal child with another to the reverse $300-400.

Also featured in the auction are some substantial pieces of antique furniture including a magnificent Victorian banquet table, Victorian mahogany sideboard, 19th Century French armoire, Challen parlour grand piano and an Edwardian oak six piece bedroom suite.

Lot 299, an important piece of Hester Bateman sterling silver, hallmarked London 1788 (it is a swing handle basket with original ruby glass liner) is expected to attract much interest with a pre-sale estimate of $1,500-2,000.
