Cheffins Auctioneers will be holding a Pictures & Books Sale on Thursday 10th July with a diverse range of interesting books.
The most important C17th English work of political philosophy is already attracting much attention, a first edition, first issue London copy of Hobbes (Thomas)’Leviathan Or The Matter, and a Power of A Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil’; for Andrew Crooke 1651. Hobbes was in Paris when the edition was being printed, receiving ‘every week a sheet to correct’. Est: £5,000-8,000.
Some other lots of particular popularity will be lot 459 Rowling (JK) ‘Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets’, uncorrected proof copy, London, with the original blue and white paper wrappers. Orignally given to a school teacher to read to his class, est: £300-500, also Orwell (George) ‘Animal Farm A Fairy Story’, first edition, London: Secker & Warburg 1945, est: £500-700.
Other books of great interest include Lizars (John), A system of Anatomical Plates of the Human Body, est: £300-500 and a fifth edition book of Oscar Wilde Poems, one of only 250 copies, issued under Bogue’s imprint, est: £800-1,000. www.cheffins.co.uk
