A NEW AUSTRALIAN AUCTION RECORD WAS SET LAST NIGHT FOR A COLOURED GEM STONE AND FOR A TOTAL RESULT ACHIEVED FOR ANY JEWELLERY AUCTION IN THE REGION
Finishing with $1.379million in sales (including buyers premium) Chairman Tim Goodman said, “What we achieved tonight is absolutely fantastic. This is the first time in my 38 year career I have been a part of a jewellery auction with a result like this.
The result is a great credit to our Jewellery Department and shows that the Australian market is broadening and following the lead from recent successful jewellery auctions conducted in Asia.”
Adding to the stunning result was the magnificent rare Fancy Yellow Intense diamond ring (illustrated) that surpassed the upper estimate of $280,000 and sold for AUS $402,600 (inc buyers premium) to a private collector who wishes to remain anonymous.
It was an exciting climax for the most anticipated item featured in the auction, with a final bidding duel between the unidentified telephone bidder and a North West Sydney based gentleman who attended the sale with a lady companion.
This fabulous piece of jewellery staked its claim as the most valuable jewellery item ever sold by Bonhams & Goodman and is one of the highest prices achieved in Australia for a diamond.
As for the unassuming gentleman spurred on by his glamorous wife in the room he conceded “the buyer certainly got the stone at a reasonable price.” The new owner of the yellow diamond was not the only winner on the night. A diamond necklace consigned by Tara Moss, international model and best-selling author, also sold for $6,100 (including buyers premium), beating the entry level estimate.
Bonhams & Goodman announced today that they will capitalise on this outstanding success by taking the next catalogue of fine Jewells to new locations for pre-sale viewings. “We are looking at a number of options including Perth and the Gold Coast”, Head of Jewellery in Sydney, Isabelle Quinn said.
