Glass recalls Schooner tragedy in 1833
A unique glass which commemorates a ship lost of Aberdeen is to be sold by Newcastle based auction house Anderson & Garland. The glass, known as a “Rummer” is engraved with the Schooner “Ranger” on one side and to the other;
“J & B Christie
the Schooner Ranger lost off Aberdeen
Septr 1st 1833”
The glass stands 9.5 inches high (24cms) and has a hollow section in the stem with a three penny piece inside.
Steven Moore, Senior Specialist at the firm said;
“These ‘coin’ glasses were made as a show of the glassmakers skill and would be engraved on a commission basis, often to commemorate events like this example. It would have been made and engraved in the North East of England. I would love to hear if anyone know anything about this tragedy.”
The glass is expected to sell for between £600 – £800 in Anderson & Garlands March Auction 10th, 11th & 12th March 2009
