Bloomsbury Children’s Books, Private Press & Limited Editions

Bloomsbury’s handsome 591 lot sale of Children’s Books, Private Press & Limited editions, Livres d’Artistes, Modern Illustrated Books and Original Art Work on 26th February, in London is made up of items from a wide variety of private collections most of which have not been on the market for many decades.

Les Horribles et Espovantables Faictz et Prouesses du Très Renommé Pantagruel… A major highlight of the sale must be the very strong group of over 200 Livres d’Artistes embracing household names from Matisse, Chagall, Buffet, Braque, Calder, Derain and Dufy to Ernst, Vlaminck, Frink, Foujita, Goya and Hockney. Lot 276 Les Horribles et Espovantables Faictz et Prouesses du …Pantagruel with bold woodcut illustrations by Derain, is a rare example of multi-colour printing from single blocks, and is expected to fetch £8000-12000. Number 51 of 300 copies of the magnificent Cirque (lot 338) by the author and artist Leger, is also estimated £8000-12000. The genius of Henry Moore and his fellow Yorkshireman WH Auden, can be seen in Selections from Poems (lot 369) which reveal their love and fascination for the Yorkshire Moors (estimate £1000-1500).

Amongst other mouth-watering items, is the excellent example of the very rare variant deluxe edition and first trade edition of The Tale of Peter Rabbit (lot 163). Preserved in modern Buchram and suede lined morocco drop-back box by Bayntun-Riviere (1902), it is estimated £5000-6000. ‘Golliwogs’ have become a sensitive issue recently and Bloomsbury is offering a complete 13 volume set of the Golliwog books dating from 1896-1909 by Bertha and Florence Upton(lot 217), for £2500-3500. Those interested in original artwork, will be delighted by original drawings such as The King and his Chariot by Kate Greenaway (lot 86) a pen, ink and watercolour for Diamonds and Toads, estimated £2000-2500. Charming examples by Mabel Lucie Attwell are expected to reach £400-700 (lots 57-58).
