135 year-old pig set to squeal all the way home…

PUBLISHED 7 March 2009

An American bourbon flask in the shape of a pig, discovered in a draw in Newcastle-under-Lyme, England during a house clearance, sold for the handsome sum of £3,800 at a Staffordshire fine art auction last week. Dating from around 1875 and attributed to Anna Pottery, the piece is something of a rare find as Ben Gamble, head auctioneer at Cuttlestones in Penkridge, explains:

“Pieces like this don’t come along too often and this one is all the more special as, not only is it in remarkable condition, at some point it’s survived crossing the Atlantic. It’s a charming piece and a real slice of American history – as such, we anticipated great interest from both sides of the Atlantic and certainly haven’t been disappointed.

“It’s incredible to think that it has spent years forgotten, languishing in the bottom of somebody’s draw – it really makes you wonder what other hidden treasures are tucked away in cupboards around the country.”

The pig will soon be returning to its place of origin, as a US purchaser made the winning bid. For further information contact bengamble@cuttlestones.co.uk or call 01785 714905.
