The first auction of British Contemporary Ceramics will take place the 4 – 10 June, 2009, and will include over 100 lots of fine British Studio Ceramics by leading figures, including Bernard Leach, David Leach, William Marshall, Katharine Pleydell-Bouverie, Lucie Rie, John Ward and Gabriele Koch.

contemporary-ceramics.jpgActing as consultant for the series of sales to be offered over the course of the coming year and beyond is Marijke Varrall-Jones, the founder of specialist art consultancy and pop-up Gallery maak contemporary ceramics and former head of Contemporary Ceramics at Bonhams. She says “I look forward to working together with Auction Atrium and the many collectors of contemporary ceramics to establish a unique marketplace for what continues to be a vibrant and active collecting field. Auction Atrium’s approach enables them to offer the entire range of works to an international audience, from new and emerging artists at the introductory level right through to high quality examples by leading artists in contemporary ceramics.”

Auction Atrium’s involvement in contemporary ceramics comes at an important time for the field, which has seen the three largest auction houses abandon the sale of these works. “We are pleased to take on the mantle of other auction houses such as Bonhams to provide a platform for the sale and purchase of contemporary ceramics” says Allison Earl Woessner, founder and Managing Director of Auction Atrium. “We are confident that working in partnership with Marijke we will be able to fill this exciting niche in the market.”
