Picasso ceramics
In 1946 Picasso visited the annual potter’s exhibition in Vallauris in the South of France, near Cannes. The Madoura stall was of particular interest and he met the owners – Suzanne and George Ramié, who invited him to their workshop. So began a fruitful working relationship. They set aside a studio for Picasso who made several ceramics. These were then produced in editions, either by the exact repetition of the plaster and decoration, or by using clay moulds to take an impression from the original. These two methods together are known as ‘Editions Picasso’. The second one is referred to as ‘Empreinte Originale de Picasso’ and these stamps appear on each work produced.

Faces in various poses and bullfighting are recurring themes in Picasso’s prints and ceramics, both of which are represented in the sale.
