FIRST SPECIALIST SILVER AUCTIONEER LAUNCHES IN LONDON

MATTHEW BARTON, who has over 20 years experience in the auction world, is delighted to announce that he will be holding his first independent auction of Silver, Works of Art and Objects of Vertu on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 in West Kensington at 25 Blythe Road, W14.

He will be working as Matthew Barton Ltd and is London’s only specialist auction house dedicated to the sale of Silver, Works of Art & Objects of Vertu. Sales will be held in November and May.

Matthew started as a specialist in Sotheby’s Bond Street silver department. Beginning with the cataloguing of a large collection of vinaigrettes, he went on to deal with some of the largest and best works by the Royal goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge & Rundell. He left London to run the antique sales of a Nairobi-based auction business and then spent two years as a freelance valuation specialist in silver and works of art on the West Coast of America. Returning to Sotheby’s in 1996, he became a Deputy Director and Head of their valuations department at the Olympia saleroom. He subsequently became a Director of Lyon & Turnbull South and continued to focus especially on the fields of silver, vertu and works of art.

He said: “I am extremely pleased to be using my wealth of experience and fascination for the field in this enterprise, Matthew Barton Ltd. Over the last few years, the larger auction houses have increased their minimum lot value so much that it is difficult to find anywhere to sell many items in London.

“I am very excited about this new venture in London, the world’s art market centre. We will hold specialised sales that appeal to the general buyer, but also attract the specialist collectors and dealers in the field. I will also offer free and confidential expert advice on the antiques market; provide written valuations for possible auction sale, insurance, probate, family division and tax purposes.“

Matthew Barton Ltd’s auction will take place in Blythe Road, at the same venue used by Thomas Del Mar to sell Antique Arms, Armour and Militaria and Charles Miller for specialist Marine and Scientific Instrument Sales. Viewing will take place prior to the sale, and all lots will be illustrated on the website and in the catalogue. Entries can be accepted up to September 23.
