Contemporary Leaded Glass Lamp by Joseph Porcelli Sells for Almost 2x Estimate at James D. Julia Auction

A contemporary 20” All-Over Bouquet leaded glass lamp designed and executed by glass artist Joseph Porcelli was the surprise performer at the latest Lamp & Glass Auction held June 23, 2010 at James D. Julia Auctions of Fairfield Maine for $19,837.50, almost two times its pre-sale estimate of $8-10,000.00.

The 20” Bouquet, the second Porcelli lamp to sell through Julia’s (The artist’s 22” Spidermum lamp sold during Julia’s June, 2009 Lamp & Glass Auction for $17, 250.00, almost $5,000.00 over its pre-sale estimate despite the fact that it was incorrectly attributed), marks an important turn in collectors’ interests in contemporary leaded glass work. Julia’s Lamp & Glass sale, which included an impressive offering of works from the Tiffany, Gallé, Stueben and Handel Studios, in addition to other important glass works, has become a important event in the annual auction season, attracting not only some of the finest works, but also the attention of enthusiastic collectors and dealers in the field.

The artist, Joseph Porcelli, also a painter and author specializes in leaded glass lamp design, fabrication and restoration. He maintains a studio in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
