Richard Winterton Auction Hammered Coin Hoard for Over £10K

The collection of over forty hammered medieval and later coins had been brought into Richard Winterton Auctioneers’ coin expert Stephen Wrenn just before Christmas. Comprising hammered gold and silver coinage spanning the reigns of Aethelred I, Edward the Confessor, William I, Edward I, King John, Edward IV, Henry VII, Elizabeth I, Henry III and James I, the collection had been collected primarily during the 1980’s by a local gentleman.

Mr Wrenn comments:

‘This is one of the finest collections of early hammered coinage I have dealt with in my many years as a coin and medal consultant. Notable for the fine quality and condition of the coins, the vendor was a discerning collector who only collected the best, each of which was carefully researched.

We advertised the collection extensively in the International and local press. A detailed colour image of both sides of each coin was taken and in turn marketed on the Internet and catalogues sent out to our database of active buyers. This meticulous pre-sale preparation paid off as we received an unprecedented number of enquires and requests for private viewings, all culminating in some impressive results. The importance of dedicated specialist sales for coins and medals are essential in achieving the full potential of collections such as this’.

Individual highlights included Lot 7, an Edward IV first reign (1461-1470) gold Ryal or Rose Noble of ten shillings at £1,500, (against £700-900 pre-sale expectations) and Lot 8, an Edward IV second reign (1471-1483) gold Angel at £1,600. The highest price was reserved for Lot 9, a highly sought after Henry VII (1502-1504) gold Angel at £1,800.

The next Coin and Medal Sale is in early March. Coin/Medal expert Stephen Wrenn will be holding a series of special free valuation days every Tuesday from 10am to 12midday at The Lichfield Auction Centre, (no appointment necessary although may be advisable).
