Bonhams Announces First Fine Oriental Rugs Carpets And Tapestries Auction in New York

Bonhams introduces for the first time in New York, a Fine Oriental Rugs, Carpets and Tapestries sale, adding to their already comprehensive list of well-regarded auctions on the East coast. The auction will take place on Monday, February 28, 2011 at 1 p.m. at their saleroom located on 580 Madison Avenue at 56th Street.

Simulcast to Los Angeles, the 154 lot sale will offer an array of 18th and 19th century rugs and carpets from China, India, Israel, Persia, Turkey and Uzbekistan, as well as an important collection of Flemish and French tapestries.

Malcolm Barber, Group Chief Executive Officer, says, “We are delighted to now offer rugs, carpets and tapestry sales to our New York clientele. Due to the enormous success of the auctions on the West coast, we are pleased to further our reach with sales in Manhattan.” He adds, “We have sourced in consignments from across the U.S. and the catalog is available and has been circulated to our international subscribers.”

Highlights of the sale include: an Oushak carpet from West Anatolia, late 19th century, size approximately 15ft. 7in. x 20ft. 7in. (est. $50,000-80,000); an Amritsar carpet from India, circa 1900, size approximately 14ft. 1in. x 16ft. 4in (est. $35,000-55,000); a Bakshaish carpet from Northwest Persia, circa 1880, size approximately 15ft. 1in. x 24ft. 7in. (est. $30,000-50,000); and a Mohtasham Kashan carpet from Central Persia, late 19th century, size approxiamtely 12ft. x 17ft. (est. $30,000-50,000).

Other works of interest are: a Hadji Jalili Tabriz carpet from Northwest Persia, circa 1880, size approximately 10ft. 8in. x 15ft. 8in. (est. $35,000-45,000); an Agra carpet from India, circa 1900, size approximately 14ft. 5in. x 19ft. 2in. (est. $30,000-40,000); a Kerman carpet from South Central Persia, late 19th century, size approximately 10ft. 3in. x 17ft. (est. $20,000-25,000); and a Samarkand carpet from Uzbekistan, late 19th century, size approximately 9ft. 8in. x 12ft. 3in (est. $20,000-25,000).

Important textile art consists of: a tapestry from Flanders, late 17th century, size approximately 9ft. 4in. x 15ft. 7in. (est. $15,000-20,000); a Flemish game park tapestry from Flanders, 16th century, size approximately 7ft. x 13ft. 6in. (est. $25,000-35,000); an Aubusson tapestry, France, 18th century, size approximately 9ft. 5in. x 10ft. 5in. (est. $14,000-15,000); and a tapestry from France, 18th century, size approximately 10ft. 4in. x 12ft. 2in. (est. $18,000-20,000).

Additional items of note include: an Oushak carpet from West Anatolia, late 19th century, size approximately 12ft. 2in. x 16ft. 4in. (est. $15,000-25,000); a Sultanabad carpet from Central Persia, late 19th century, size approximately 12ft. 6in. x 16ft. (est. $20,000-30,000); a Serapi carpet from Northwest Persia, late 19th century, size approximately 11ft. 2in. x 15ft. 1in. (est. $24,000-28,000); and a Tiger rug from Tibet, 19th century, size approximately 2ft. 8in. x 5ft. (est. $3,500-4,500).
