Bonhams to Auction Colourist Collection in Edinburgh

The finest group of Colourist paintings to be auctioned in Scotland in a generation is on view in Glasgow at the Blythswood Square Hotel, Glasgow on 3rd August prior to their sale in Edinburgh on the evening of 31st August.

At the sale’s heart is a private American collection which is coming home to be sold and features all the big names of the Colourist movement – Peploe, Cadell, Fergusson and George Hunter.

The star work is a £500,000 classic painting by, Samuel Peploe. ‘Flowers and Fruit’, from 1920 is an important work which displays many of Peploe’s most characteristic qualities. One of his classic ‘roses’ oils, it is a wonderful exploration of the balance between natural form and design – a driving concern of the Colourist School. It is estimated at between £300,000 and 500,000.

‘Still Life with Flowers, Fruit and Fan’, also from 1920, features many distinctive Peploe motifs – Chinese vase, fruit, fan and book and emphasises his interest in shape and pattern. It is estimated at £200,000-300,000.

Other outstanding works on show include ‘The White Room’ (£200,000-300,000), by F CB Cadell and ‘At the Milliners, Paris’ by John Duncan Fergusson (£180,000 – 250,000).

The Scottish Colourists formed one of the most significant and influential of British 20th century art movement. They studied and travelled in France in the artistically convulsive early years of the 20th century absorbing influences on form, and above all colour, which they applied on their return to Scotland. Their works are highly sought after, not just in Scotland itself, but increasingly all over the world.

In all, over 25 pictures by the four colourists will be on view together with paintings by other important Scottish painters such as Allan Ramsay (‘Lieutenant John Abercrombie’ £100,000-150,000), Robert Gemmell Hutchison (‘Sea Gulls and Sapphire Seas’ £120,000-180,000) and William McTaggart (‘Showery Harvest Day’ £100,000 – 150,000).
