Bonhams to auction of rare Disneyana collectibles and memorabilia from a single-owner collection

Bonhams looks forward to presenting its Disneyana and Fine Toy Auction, January 30, 2012 in San Francisco, featuring 130 lots of historic Disney toys and memorabilia from a single-owner collection. The collection includes toys from the 1930s through contemporary eras.

Leading the auction will be a rare Mickey Mouse Circus Train Set, including a lithographed circus train from the 1930s, made by Lionel for Disney (pre-sale est. $4,000-6,000). The wind-up train features its original paper cutouts of circus tents and tickets, and is accompanied by its original box.

Another top highlight is a collection of 1930s delicate celluloid figures (pre-sale est. $2,000-2,500). One of the celluloid pieces features Mickey riding Pluto, accompanied with its original box.

An Ensign (British) Magic Lantern set in its original leather case, with 10 individual boxes of black and white glassine images will also be available (pre-sale est. $1,500-2,000). This item is scarce because there are few British manufactured Disney items from the 1930s.

Another unusual piece in the sale is a 1930s wood radio by Disney and Emerson, featuring carvings of Mickey on both its front and sides (pre-sale est. $1,000-1,500). The radio is a cross-collectible, of interest to Disney and radio collectors alike.

Jim Friedman, the Toys Specialist for Bonhams in San Francisco, says of the sale, “The collection encompasses the scarce 1930s era through the 1960s era. There is something for everyone who has attachments to Disney and childhood.”

Also of significance in the sale is an important collection of early Disneyland material, as well as advertising from the 1930s. Included will be unused “E” admission tickets to Disneyland, from when it first opened (pre-sale est. $300). The “E” tickets, that were part of a series of tickets offered by Disney until the early 1980s, were the most desirable admission tickets at the time, for all of the attractions they included.

Rounding out the sale will be a variety of 1930s bisque pieces, authorized by Disney and made in Japan (pre-sale est. $200-300). Among them are children’s bisque toothbrush holders, featuring outstretched moveable arms, and that could hold toothpaste and a toothbrush.

The sale’s illustrated catalogue will be available online in the weeks preceding it, for review and purchase at www.bonhams.com.
