Colonial and Revolutionary War-era Items for Bonhams June Arms & Armor Auction

The Antique Arms and Armor and Sporting Guns auction at Bonhams, June 10 in San Francisco, is highlighted by Colonial and Revolutionary War-era highlights, the leading lot of which is the Roman Wetmore incised American powder horn, attributed to the ‘Mementos Mori’ carver, estimated at $20,000-30,000. The 12-inch powder horn is inscribed “Roman Wetmore/Oswego, Aug. 6, 1760.”

Antique Arms and ArmorAlso notable and on offer from around that period is an iron three pounder gun with attribution to the Siege of Yorktown in 1781, estimated at $20,000-30,000, and a British iron swivel gun with attribution to the Revolutionary War, estimated at $15,000-25,000. Both come from the renowned U.S. Cartridge Company collection.

Of nearly 600 lots, the sale will include a broad span of collectible arms, comprising armor edged weapons and pole arms, dating from the 16th through the early 20th centuries; 18th and 19th century American and European firearms; militaria; and a selection of fine sporting guns.

Highlights will include a cased .410 gage Thomasoni-engraved Abbiatico & Salvinelli Jorema Royal sidelock ejector gun (est. $30,000-50,000); a pair of percussion conversion pistols cased with accessories and removable shoulder stock, signed Boutet, Directeur Artiste A Versailles (est. $30,000-50,000); a rare U.S. Hotchkiss 1.65-inch light mountain rifle (est. $30,000-40,000); a fine German percussion rifle by W. Pfeuffer of Stuttgart, circa 1830 (est. $5,000-8,000); a fine engraved and gold-inlaid 16 gage German double barrel hammer gun for Jacob Sackreuter of Frankfurt, from the fourth quarter of the 19th century (est. $10,000-15,000); and a fine pair of mid-18th century, silver mounted flintlock pistols by Griffin (est. $12,000-15,000).
