Jain art has had a longstanding following amongst collectors, many of whom are Jains themselves; Jainism, a minority religion in India with expatriate communities around the world of about 6 million in all, is particularly celebrated for its teachings of non-violence. Most artifacts depict one or more of the twenty-four Tirthankaras, spiritual teachers fulfilling a similar role to the Buddha, seeking permanent knowledge of the soul. An example is pictured below.

Also strongly represented are some fine Himalayan bronzes, over 100 Indian miniature paintings, Islamic ceramics (Damascus tiles are the subject of Arthur’s forthcoming book) and metalwork.

A particular highlight of the Himalayan section are four spectacular sections from a copper gilt arch, from a Buddhist shrine. It was made in Tibet during the 16th or possibly even the 15th century and the style is strongly influenced by the art from neighbouring Nepal, with an estimate of £20,000-30,000. Amongst the nearly 400 lots, estimates range from £200 to £30,000.

On the 4th November 2014, the day after the online bidding opens, Arthur Millner will also be giving a lecture at the Winter Olympia Art and Antiques Fair, entitled ‘Asiatic themes in Mamluk and Ottoman Tiles from Damascus 1400-1800’.

The auction will be available for viewing online from the 27th October at www.25BlytheRoad.com and at the 25 Blythe Road Gallery, London W14 0PD on Sunday 2nd November to Thursday 6th November. Bidding opens on 3rd and closes on 6th November.
