IMPORTANT ORIGINAL ARTWORKS BY JOAN MIRO AND WAYNE THIEBAUD WILL HEADLINE SHANNON’S OCT. 29 FINE ART AUCTION

It’s Shannon’s largest fine art auction to date, with 348 lots in many genres and art categories.

MILFORD, Conn. – Important artworks by Joan Miro and Wayne Thiebaud are the expected headliners at a 348-lot sale of paintings, drawings, sculptures and fine prints slated for Thursday, October 29th, by Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers, at the firm’s gallery at 354 Woodmont Road in Milford, as well as online, at www.Invaluable.com.

The Miro piece is a pencil, pastel, India ink and watercolor work on paper titled Femme, Oiseau, Etoiles (“Woman, Bird, Stars”). It was executed in 1942 as part of a series that Miro produced between 1942 and 1949. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity (from the ADOM) and was included in the book Miro Drawings II, Catalog Raisonne (Paris, 2010, Volume 2, No. 920).

The artwork by Thiebaud is a pastel on paper, executed in 1964 and titled Eyebrow Pencil, in the artist’s hand on the reverse. Both pieces are from the collection of the legendary New York collector and philanthropist Vera List and descended to her granddaughter. The Miro is estimated at $125,000-$175,000; the Thiebaud is estimated at $200,000-$300,000.

“This will be an auction that is filled with surprises and it is already one of our largest, with 347 lots,” said Gene Shannon of Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers. “A significant part of the auction is a group of 175 paintings from an American collection. Also featured will be several 19th Century American landscapes, some wonderful American Modernism works and more.”

This diverse collection is composed of American and European works from a variety of schools. Represented are works from the Hudson River School, still life paintings and European landscapes. Artists include Thomas Doughty; Hovsep Pushman; James Bard; and Pauline Palmer.

Other artists include Carducius P. Ream; Albert F. King; Hugh Bolton Jones; William L. Sonntag; William Aiken Walker; Hermann Herzog; and Antonio Jacobsen. These are just a few from the collection; there are many more.

Landscapes artworks from the American 19th century will be led by Jasper Cropsey; John F. Kensett; William Trost Richards; Albert Bierstadt; Sanford Gifford; Samuel Colman; R. F. Gignoux; and Alexander Wyant.

American Modernism will feature works by Rolph Scarlett; Jules Olitski; Jenny Holzer; Nicholas Krushenick; John Little; Hilla Rebay; Charles Green Shaw; Michael Goldberg; and Mark Kostabi.

Also featured will be works by Abbott Fuller Graves; Rico y Ortega; Daniel Gerhartz; Louis Aston Knight; Leroy Neiman; Seund Ja Rhee; Eric Sloane; Emil Carlsen; David Burliuk; Everett Shinn; Henry Inman; and Bruce Crane.

The fine prints category will include five folios from Victor Vasarely; as well as prints from Marc Chagall; J.A.M. Whistler; Grant Wood; Thomas Hart Benton; and Frank Benson. A full-color printed catalog will be available for sale Oct. 7, for $30.

Previews will be held daily, starting Monday, Oct. 19th, and continuing through Thursday, Oct. 28th (closed Sunday, Oct. 25th). Preview hours are 11-6 (EST), except on Saturday, Oct. 24th, when the preview will end at 3 p.m. There will also be a preview on Thursday, Oct. 29th, the date of sale, from noon until 5:30 p.m. The auction will start promptly at 6 p.m. Eastern time. Live, internet, phone and absentee bidding will all be permitted.
