Diamonds and Magnificent Works in Platinum Highlight Bonhams December Fine Jewelry Sale – Bonhams & Butterfields, international fine arts auctioneers, bring exquisite diamonds, fine works in platinum and desirable period jewelry to auction in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City on December 17, 2007. The firm’s Winter Fine Jewelry sale comprises nearly 200-lots and will be simulcast to the firm’s three US salesrooms.

The marquee lot of the winter sale is a highly desirable French diamond and platinum rivière necklace (est. $350,000/550,000). The rivière necklace is considered a timeless design, of interest to collectors and those with classic tastes. The simplicity of the arrangement creates the aesthetic of a ring of floating diamonds around the wearer’s neck and directs a viewer’s focus on the diamonds themselves. The piece features 41 round brilliant-cut diamonds, each prong-set, with the central diamonds weighing as much as 5.51-carats. The remainder of the diamonds taper in size and weight to an estimated 0.75-carats. The necklace has an estimated total diamond weight 53.50-carats with French assay marks. It comes to auction from the collection of Douce Isabelle François-Freitas.

Michael Larson, G.G., jewelry specialist in Bonhams & Butterfields’ Los Angeles gallery, said, “The necklace is an impressive collection of more than 40 very fine quality diamonds, and we do expect the interest to be international in this wonderful example.”

Along with the diamond necklace, the December sale of Fine Jewelry also features some rare and remarkable period pieces. A highlight is an unusual Art Nouveau pendant brooch by Georges Fouquet (est. $8/12,000) depicting a female face carved in ivory, surrounded by a diamond leaf, fresh water pearl and plique-a jour enamel frame. Hailing from three generations of prominent jewelers, Fouquet was a leader in the industry and his work had been exhibited at the famed Paris International Exhibition of 1900.

A rare Chaumet, Paris cabochon sapphire and diamond bracelet (est. $20/30,000), a wide French diamond and platinum bracelet (est. $7,500/9,500) and a stunning Oscar Heyman diamond and emerald bracelet (est. $12/16,000) are also on offer within the period jewelry pieces – these lots expected to interest collectors.

Diamonds to be featured include: a 6.40ct round brilliant-cut diamond ring set in an elegant four-prong mount (est. $60/80,000); a 7.55ct round brilliant-cut diamond and platinum ring (est. $50/70,000); and a 13.75ct. light yellow round brilliant-cut diamond and platinum ring expected to bring $30,000 to $50,000.
