Sample La Dolce Vita at Bonhams Fine Wine Sale

Bonhams next sale, Fine & Rare wines featuring Italy, includes a record number of lots and for the first time, will extend into a buyer-friendly evening session. With over 1,200 lots featured in the sale, highlights of each of its three sessions include the renowned, and highly collectable “Super Tuscans” and a large parcel of over 400 cases of the exotic 2003 vintage Bordeaux.

Italy’s top wine producers are represented including 8 vintages of the acclaimed Tignanello in bottles, magnums and double magnums, Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso and Solaia. There are also six different vintages of the equally renowned Sassicaia, of which the 1997 vintage is estimated at £1,300-1,500. Aside from the super Tuscans there are also Barolos from Gaja, Bricco Manzoni and Borgogno, Amarone from Masi, Serpico from Feudi San Gregorio and Rubesco from Lungarotti.

As Europe scorched in the summer of 2003, chateaux across Bordeaux reaped the fruits of the heat wave. The sweltering conditions that summer produced extraordinary wines, favouring the Northern Medoc, particularly St Estephe. Wines from over 45 different Bordeaux chateaux will be shipped directly from Bordeaux for this sale including those of Calon-Segur (£420-500), Cos d’Estournel (£850-1,100), Montrose (£800-900), Lafite Rothschild (£5,200-6,000 per dozen), Mouton-Rothschild, Pichon-Lalande, Pichon-Baron, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Leoville-Lascases (£800-900), Leoville-Poyferre (£550-650), Margaux, L’Angelus and Cheval-Blanc, most available in 10 case parcels. There are also10 cases of Yquem (£1,200-1,400), which was also highly successful this vintage.

Particularly rare bottles in the sale include a bottle of the highly prized Hermitage La Chapelle 1945 (£5,000-8,000 for one bottle); Pol Roger Cuvee de Reserve Champagne 1947 (£900-1,100 for two bottles) and La Tache 1990 (£5,000-6,000 for 3 bottles).

In addition, the contents of an extensive private cellar provide several vintages of Chateau d’Yquem including 1983, 1976 and half bottles of 1968, which would make a fitting present for anyone approaching their 40th birthday. The cellar also features Taylor 1927 (£220 a bottle) and Delaforce 1935 port.

Concluding the sale is a range of interesting and rare whiskies including a 45-year-old bottle of Macphalis which was distilled in 1938 (£400-600).

The sale also includes an extensive selection of Claret, Rhone, Burgundy and Australian wines, as well as many mixed cases. These offer any wine lover the opportunity to acquire interesting wines at affordable prices, such as Chateau Les Ormes de Pez 2003 at £120-180 per dozen; Talbot 2003 at £200-260 per dozen; Chasse-Spleen at £130-180 per dozen and La Lagune 2003 at £140-200 per dozen.
