Tennants Spring Book & Map Sale Highlights

At noon on Wednesday 19th March Tennants in Leyburn will host their Spring Book and Map Sale with over 340 lots of books covering a vast variety of subjects.

bookgroupspring08.jpgThere are some first edition gems by Beatrix Potter including ‘The Tale of Two Bad Mice’, ‘The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes’ in its original dust jacket, ‘The Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck’, ‘The Tale of Mr Toad’, ‘The Pie and the Patty-Pan’ and ‘The Roly-Poly Pudding’ estimated to sell for £100 to £500. There is also a big collection on angling as well as science fiction and fantasy and art and antiques.

In the science fiction and fantasy genre is a 36 lot collection built up over many years by Barrie Stirzaker. Many are signed first editions in fine condition and are estimated to sell from £50 to £300.

Angling books always generate much international interest and this collection totals 34 lots of rare and collectable volumes. It includes Kelson’s ‘The Salmon Fly’, a deluxe edition of Elder’s ‘The Book of the Hackle’ which includes 29 mounted hackles (feathers used for fly-tying), Pritt’s ‘North Country Flies’, Jardine’s ‘British Salmonidae’ and Keene’s ‘Fishing Tackle’. Prices are estimated from £50 to £600.

A rare find is ‘Winter Quarters’, one of only 300 copies and signed by E. H. Shackleton and 16 members of his Antarctic Shore Party in 1909, estimated at £800 – £1200.

For James Bond fans there is a first edition of ‘Live and Let Die’ with its first issue dust jacket, estimated at £800-£1,200. A rare first edition of Pullman’s ‘Northern Lights’ from his ‘Dark Materials’ Trilogy is estimated at £800 to £1,200.

A large folio album containing 17 original mounted certificates of honours awarded to the famous French pioneering balloonist Eugene Godard from a variety of international institutions between 1852 and 1881, estimated to sell for £200-£300.

Volumes on art and antiques are always popular and the sale includes a signed drawing by Laura Knight along with a selection of deluxe illustrated books by Rackham, Dulac and Aldin.

Other topics covered in the sale include architecture, agriculture, topography, natural history, genealogy, the Titanic, geology, economic and Scottish history, theology, travel and an interesting selection of early maps.
