Hart Davis Hart Realizes $4.3M in Auction of Fine & Rare Wines, Continues Market Upswing

Last week’s two-day sale brought in $4,383,750, selling 100% of the 3,227 lots offered and affirming the major surge in pricing seen in HDH auctions this year. Hammer prices in HDH’s March Auction were over 20% higher on average, and further increases were again seen in this sale. The constant flurry of active bidding during each day’s live session kept the auctioneers on their toes. The sale attracted worldwide interest, with bids hailing from across the U.S. as well as 15 different countries, resulting in hundreds of successful buyers.

1,262 lots sold for over the high estimate, breaking numerous world records across several categories. Lot 117: one bottle of 1961 Château Latour sold at $5,736 (est. $2,200-$3,200). Of the 24 lots of Diamond Creek, 20 lots hammered at or above the high estimate. Highlights include Lot 132: three 3L-bottles of 1982 Diamond Creek single vineyards, which fetched $5,736 (est. $1,500-$2,200). Similarly, Lot 135: three magnums of 1984 Diamond Creek single vineyards went for $3,107 (est. $1,100-$1,700). Two bottles of 1988 Sassicaia had a market estimate of $650-$950, obliterated by the $1,792 they garnered (Lot 2566).

With all major wine regions represented, this auction underscores an immensely positive overall market outlook. With the industry’s largest bidding pool and lowest buyer’s premium (19.5%) HDH continues to be the top-performing U.S. auction house, bringing each of their consignors the best possible results.
