Vintage Treasures Offered in Heritage Movie Poster Auction

DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Vintage Movie Posters once again offers numerous Hollywood treasures from all corners of the cinematic world in their upcoming Signature auction, to be held March 11 & 12, 2008, in Dallas, Texas.

“This auction offers something from virtually every genre of filmmaking,” said Grey Smith, Director of Vintage Movie Poster Auctions for Dallas-based Heritage, “from horror and science fiction movies, Westerns, comedies, dramas, and silent films, to musicals, foreign films, mysteries, animated classics, and more.”

“One piece I’m particularly excited about,” Smith said, “is the only known copy of the beautiful Style B three sheet for It Happened One Night , the classic film starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Not only is this an incredibly rare stone litho poster, it also happens to be the very best image from this outstanding film, which swept five major Oscars, including Best Actor, Actress, Director, Picture, and Screenplay.”

“Bette Davis collectors will be particularly enthusiastic about this auction,” Smith said, “as we’re offering two very rare pieces from the career of this legendary actress. The first is a magnificent one sheet for Of Human Bondage , the picture that made Davis an overnight superstar. Paper on this title is virtually non-existent, making this a significant opportunity for serious collectors. Also in this auction is another true rarity, a stunning six sheet for Dark Victory, one of the greatest tear jerkers of all time, and widely considered one of Davis’s best performances. This poster also features what many acknowledge as the most radiant image of Davis ever produced.”

“As anyone who even casually follows this hobby knows, nothing is hotter today than Universal horror paper,” Smith said, “and, once again, we’ve got some incredible material in this category. Foremost is a title card and six scene cards for Son of Frankenstein, the film that marked the last appearance of Boris Karloff as Mary Shelley’s famous monster. Also featured is one of only two known copies of the Style D one sheet for The Raven , a chilling and atmospheric picture that teamed Karloff with horror icon Bela Lugosi to fabulous effect.”

Smith continued, “With spring training just opening up, and America’s mind turning to thoughts of baseball, this seems like the perfect time to mention the very rare one sheet for The Babe Comes Home , an outstanding stone litho poster from 1927, one of only two known copies, that features The Sultan of Swat, George Herman “Babe” Ruth himself, renowned as one of the greatest ballplayers ever to brandish a bat. Produced in the same year that Babe established his home run record, this was part of a larger campaign to market this early media superstar. We sold this poster in 2003 for $138,000, and expect that it will bring an even higher price this time around.”

“We’re also pleased to present the second part of the Denver Sherry Collection of Midget Window Cards,” Smith said. “Denver’s is probably the best collection ever assembled of this often-overlooked format, and collectors responded enthusiastically to the pieces offered in our November 2007 auction. The collection includes some great titles, sure to tempt poster collectors in all genres.”

“The dark side of cinema, film noir, is well represented in this auction,” Smith said, “with many of the classic titles, highlighted by the American one sheet for The Lady from Shanghai, as well as a stunning, and very rare, Italian 4-folio from the same film, and including spectacular material from such noir classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Maltese Falcon, The Third Man, High Sierra, Gun Crazy, Murder My Sweet, The Blue Dahlia, and more. Fans of this important genre will certainly have plenty to chose from!”

“Silent film fans won’t be disappointed,” Smith said, “as this auction holds some special surprises from the pre-sound era. First and foremost are the incredible original release French posters to director Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc , one a Double Grande measuring 63″ x 93″, the other an even more massive piece measuring 96″ x 126″. These exquisite posters really must be seen in person to be believed, and their rarity cannot be overstated. Also available for bidding are pieces from such important titles as London After Midnight, Shadows – both starring the great Lon Chaney Sr. – The Eagle with Rudolph Valentino, The Great K&A Train Robbery starring Tom Mix, The Sea Beast, an early adaptation of Moby Dick with John Barrymore, The Last Days of Pompeii, Abel Gance’s Napoleon, and much more. Paper from these early films rarely surfaces, which leads me to expect some spirited bidding in this area.”

“Of course, this short list barely scratches the surface of this exciting auction,” Smith said. “For more information, I’d invite people to visit www.HA.com/MoviePosters , where they’ll find full-color, enlargeable images of each and every lot in the auction, complete with our thorough catalog descriptions. Best of all, you can even place your bids on line. If you can’t be at the auction in Dallas in person, let me recommend our new live bidding platform, Heritage Live.
