(Indianapolis, Indiana) Dan Ripley’s Antique Helper is welcoming spring on March 29 and 30 with a weekend offering two very special auction opportunities. On Saturday, March 29, Dan Ripley will present the Spring Italian Glass Sale.
This exceptional auction consists of more than 200 select lots. Highlighting the sale are two very rare examples seldom seen at auction: a pair of candlesticks in the Primavera technique by the Artistica Barovier Company. They are estimated at $5,000 – $10,000. Fueling the excitement, an Artisti Barovier and Umberto Bellotto murrina platter on an ornate wrought iron stand will be offered, possibly for the first time. It is estimated between $70,000 and $90,000.
Other selections include a circa 1880 Italian mosaic glass portrait from the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company (Salviati and Co.). This PreRaphaelite image is estimated between $10,000 and $15,000, and a Fratelli Toso Stellato glass vase by Pollio Perelda, circa 1953, is estimated at $10,000-$12,500. A rare Venini Murrina glass vase, circa 1954, and a unique Anzolo Fuga Murano studio glass vase designed by Anzolo and Guiseppe Fuga, circa 1953, are each estimated in the $15,000 to $25,000 range.
Preview images for this auction are available at our website, www.antiquehelper.com. The completed online catalog will be posted on Friday, March 14. A full-color collector’s catalogue will also be available through Antique Helper. Sunday’s Mission to Modern session begins with early 20th century design. Highlights include two fine Daum Nancy Martele cameo vases, one bearing a 1900 Paris Exposition label, estimated between $4,000 and $6,000.
Further enticing bidders, this auction will offer the usual fare that always attracts modern collectors. A diverse assortment of early to mid-century furniture, pottery and artwork round out the day’s catalog. Pottery offerings include Fantoni, Sottsass, a studio vase by Toshiko Takaezu, a small (5 ¾”) Art Deco vase by Overbeck sisters Elizabeth and Frances, a bowl by Harrison McIntosh and several Native American pieces.
Mission furniture includes a pair of very rare early Twentieth Century Arts and Crafts chairs, sporting a hand carved baseball scene. But, the undisputed show stopper in this very special sale is a dining table and chairs, sold as four side and two arm, by American woodworker, architect and designer, George Nakashima (1905-1990). Crafted from a single cut of walnut, this table exemplifies the Nakashima mystique. According to the consignor, the set was purchased in the early 1950s by his father, who visited Nakashima’s studio in New Hope, Pennsylvania. “He always did things in the best possible way,” he says of his father. The table is expected to bring between $30,000 and $40,000.
The fine art session of the sale will include a Gustave Baumann woodblock, silkscreens on aluminum by John Vassos and a silkscreen on stainless steel by Michelangelo Pistoletto. Featured along with other American and European art will be a painting by Russian artist Leonid Brailowsky. Also included, for the first time at auction, will be twelve selected works by Indiana artist Claudine Paluzzi. A well-known art educator in Indianapolis, Paluzzi taught at IUPUI, the Indianapolis Art League, the Indiana School for the Deaf, Marion College, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. From Expressionism to Assemblage to Pop Art, Paluzzi’s work testifies that she active in the important artistic movements of the 1960s and 70s. The diversity of her work demonstrates a clear artistic vision and cutting edge style
