Despite a sluggish economy, the market for Modern Design proved to be strong at a recent sale conducted by Leonard Auction. The sale featured several mid-century modern pieces by Dunbar Furniture.
The lead lot of the sale was the Edward Wormley designed sideboard, circa 1953, that brought $8,050 from a phone bidder. The unique piece was in its original state and featured laminated mahogany veneers that were interwoven with brass.
The chocolate colored sofa designed by Edward Wormley for Dunbar brought $2,475, nearly five times its pre-sale estimate. Despite extensive wear to the upholstery, bidding was fierce between the floor and several international phone bidders, with the winning bid going to a local collector on the floor.
Additional Dunbar pieces selling incredibly well included the marble top coffee table that brought $4,885 and a small storage cabinet that brought $1,950. “We were thrilled at the response from modern design dealers and collectors” said John Leonard, president of Leonard Auction. “These pieces were from a single estate and fresh to market which makes them even more attractive to bidders” added Mr. Leonard.
Leonard Auction’s next scheduled sale will occur on Saturday, September 20, 2008. The sale will feature a large collection of Coins & Currency in addition to a fine selection of 19th and 20th century antiques and collectibles. A complete color catalog of the items to be offered at this and all future sales is available at www.leonardauction.com.
