20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts Go on the Block; Skinner to Offer Tiffany, George Jensen, Modernist Design and the Estate of William S. Greenspon of NY June 27th

BOSTON, Mass. – – Skinner, one of the nation’s leading auction houses, will host an auction of 20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts in its Boston gallery on June 27th at 10 a.m. More than 550 lots of furniture and decorative and utilitarian objects from the Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Mid-Century and Post Modern periods (1880-contemporary time) will be up for bid.

lot-173Featured in the sale is a collection of timeless mid-20th century designs of Georg Jensen silver objects and jewelry. Highlights include a blossom coffeepot, covered sugar and cream pitcher (lot 215, est. $3/3,500); a pair of candelabra (lot 213, est. $7/9,000); a caraval flatware set (lot 169, est. $2,5/3,500); and a sauceboat (lot 206, est. $1,8/2,000). Johan Rhode Georg Jensen offerings include two pitchers (lot 210, est. $5/7,000 and lot 186, est. $2/2,500); a Louvre bowl (lot 211, est. $1/1,500); and a Johan Rhode for Georg Jensen and William Seitz tea service (lot 214, est. $6/8,000).

For Georg Jenson jewelry, the sale features a bracelet of two strands of interlocking links (lot 246, est. $4/600); a jewelry suite comprised of necklace no 30A, bracelet 30, ring no. 73, earrings no. 49 (lot 258, est. $8/1,200); a ladies watch (lot 271, est. $5/700); and a key ring (lot 286, est. $4/600).

Highlighted collections in sale 2464 include Modernist Furniture from the late Dr. William S. Greenspon of New York. Dr. Greenspon was well known in the New York Arts community for his keen artistic eye flawlessly mixed American Folk and Ethnographic Art, with Modernist Furniture. Of note is an eleven-piece modernist dining suite (lot 170, est. $3/5,000); two modernist tables after designs by Marcel Breuer (lot 204, est. $1,6/2,400); two machine age wall lights (lo 298, est. $6/800); and a Bauhaus influenced wall clock (lot 297, est. $150/250).

For those collectors looking for important Tiffany lamps from the period, the Tiffany peony table lamp on a peacock base (lot 75, est. $70/90,000) and a Tiffany daffodil table lamp (lot 101, est. $50/60,000) are beautiful examples executed in bronze and mosaic glass. Other Tiffany works to be emphasized include an early bronze and glass lamp c. 1900 (lot 107, est. $3/5,000); a paw-footed lamp base (lot 119, est. $10/15,000); and a Favrile table lamp (lot 91, est. $3/5,000).

For Studio furniture lovers the Wendell Castle Hat Stand 1972 made from walnut has a sculptural appeal not to be missed (lot 303, est. $15/20,000). Additional furnishings expected to draw significant attention include a Thomas Mosher walnut table (lot 309, est. $4/6,000); a Hans Wegner Papa Bear armchair and ottoman (lot 329, est. $3/5,000); five Finn Juhl chairs (lot 334, est. $1,5/2,500); and a Dakota Jackson credenza (lot 489, est. $3/5,000).

Since Museums have been actively collecting 20th century cloisonné and conducting exhibits such as the one at the Long Beach Museum, Joseph Tripetti works have received much attention such as Symphony (lot 409, est. $4/6,000) and Abstract (lot 412, est. $1/1,200).

Previews for the auction will be held from 12 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 25th, 12 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 26th, and from 8 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 27th.
