Early American Furniture and Decorations to Highlight Grogan Auction

Dedham, MA – Grogan & Company Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers is pleased to announce their October Auction including Paintings, Prints and Sculpture, 18th and 19th century Furniture and Decorative Works of Art, Silver and Oriental Rugs and Tapestries from various Estates and Collections will be held on Sunday, October 18th at 12:00 noon.

sideboardThe auction highlights include an 18th century Leven and Burr Powell Hepplewhite Mahogany Inlaid Sideboard, estimated at $10,000-20,000. The sideboard, thought to be of Southern origin, has descended within the family of Colonel Leven Powell (1737-1810), a U.S. representative from the state of Virginia who co-authored the Loudoun County Virginia Resolution of 1774. Powell began his military career as a major in the Virginia Militia where he led a battalian of Minuteman against Lord Dummore, the last royal Governor of Viriginia.

Other highlights include a 17th century Flemish Tapestry, dated 1619, from a Massachusetts institution that is estimated at $5,000-10,000 and a Russian Silver and Plique a Jour Lobed Bowl, estimated at $10,000-15,000. A Fine Federal Carved Mahogany and Birds Eye Maple Brass Inlaid Games Table from the early 19th century, estimated at $5,000-7,000 and a Federal Mahogany Satinwood and Rosewood Inlaid Lift Top Lyre Base Games Table, possibly by Thomas Seymour, is estimated at $2,000-3,000. Several dining tables will be included, featuring a massive George III Five Pedestal Mahogany Dining Table (extends to 21 feet!), estimated at $8,000-12,000.

Decorative Works of Art highlights include a 17/18th century Russian Triptych Icon, estimated at $8,000-12,000; a 19th century Copper Crowing Rooster Weathervane, estimated at $7,000-10,000; a Mark McNair Carved and Painted Decoy of a Preening Widgeon Drake, estimated at $4,000-6,000 and Two Nantucket Friendship Baskets, estimated at $700-1,000.

The silver and jewelry highlights include a Fine Egyptian Revival Yellow Gold Enamel, Diamond and Operculum Shell Necklace, estimated at $10,000-15,000; an 18 karat Gold Tiffany & Co. Vase, estimated at $8,000-12,000; and a Fine Platinum Sapphire and Diamond Bracelet, estimated at $8,000-12,000. The sale will also include a Steinway Mahogany Baby Grand Piano, estimated at $5,000-10,000; a large collection of Chinese Export Porcelain and a large selection of American and English silver. Including American makers Tiffany & Co., Gorham and S. Kirk & Son, as well as Crichton and Jensen.

The fine art offerings include Sailing Ships off the Coast by English painter Sam Bough, estimated at $1,000-1,500; Vermont Landscape by American painter Paul Strisik, estimated at $2,000-3,000; Eugene Holzhauer’s oil Hillside Village, estimated at $2,000-3,000; as well as, a large selection of prints, and a collection of paintings by Woodstock artists, including Lucille Blanch, Ruskin Williams and Jo Cantine.
