Americana, Paintings, Antique Firearms, Fine Silver and More at Fairfield Auction

Over 350 lots including the contents of two homes will be sold at the Fairfield Auction gallery January 24th. Offerings include a good selection of Americana, paintings, antique firearms, fine silver and other accessories.

American and European paintings include works a large oil on masonite by Charles Courtney Curan, May Morning, measuring 24”x48”. Works by American painters Charles Burchfield, Arthur Parton, Guy Wiggins, Edmund Greacen, Gustav Cimiotti, Alexander Podchernikoff, James Gale Tyler, Andre Gisson and Arthur Diehl should also find bidders. Contemporary works by Stephen Pace and Ken Auster will be sold as well.

European paintings are lead by a large oil on canvas of Brittany, France by Emile Bernard. Measuring 26”x34”, the work depicts the church of Pont-Aven from a hill with gathering clouds. Bernard met and painted with Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven in 1888 and developed his much admired Fauvist style. A book, Lysistrata by Aristophanes, illustrated by Pablo Picasso, 1934 will be sold. The numbered edition is signed by the artist.

A selection of Americana includes a good Sheraton mahogany sideboard and a large gilt eagle weathervane. A fine bench-made dwarf clock bearing the signature of John Bailey Jr. should also get attention. A small Charles Hart carved and painted penguin, a fascinating carved stone head, a group of Sandwich Glass lamps and a large estate group of silhouettes should do well.

Of special interest is a very fine country store spice dispenser and companion coffee dispenser dating to the late 19th century. The pair was found by the consignor on Long Island in the family of the original store owner. With painted oval views of New England and Eastlake motifs, all in nearly pristine original condition they are a remarkable pair.

A collection of antique firearms lead by an excellent Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine will be sold. Other Winchesters include two Model 1873 rifles and an engraved Model 1886 as well as Models 1892, 1894 and 1895. A stellar example of a Sharpes Model 1863 carbine with 70% original bluing, a good Smith Carbine and a Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver will also be sold.

Among several lots of Tiffany and Jensen silver is an extensive Tiffany sterling “special handwork” tea set, seven pieces plus a tray. A pair of Russian silver cigarette cases embossed with nature scenes and a good Moscow icon by Fyedor Stroganov will also be sold.

Other items of interest include an ancient Greek coin mounted as a pendant, a silver slater of Corinth and a very fine Armand Nicolet repeater chronograph. A seventy piece service of Baccarat crystal stemware and a Japanese samorai helmet with menpo should also find bidders.

The Fairfield Auction gallery is located at 53 Church Hill Road in Newtown, Connecticut. Preview will take place Friday and Saturday prior, 11am to 4pm each day and 9am to 11am auction day.
