Fine American & European Paintings for Shannon’s Auction

Shannon’s Fine American & European Paintings on April 29, 2010 offers over 250 lots including: 19th and 20th century paintings from American and European artists as well as a small number of sculptures and decorative items.

Highlights of the sale include:

Lot 86, an oil on canvas, “Along the Coast,” by the American Luminist Francis Augustus Silva (1835-1886). A classic Silva seascape, the work is signed at the lower right and measures 9 x 18 inches. Minimum bid is set at $42,000.

Lot 52, “The Lagoons of Venice,” an oil on canvas by the American Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823-1880). Painted from sketches done during Gifford’s 1869 trip to Venice, the piece is signed “SR Gifford” lower left, and incised “SRG Venice June 1869”. It measures 6 3/8 x 12 1/2 inches. Bidding will open at $36,000.

Lot 138, a John Lafarge (1835-1910) oil on canvas, “Study of Silver, Glass and Fruit” dating from 1859. This nineteenth century American still life harkens back to the Dutch school of the seventeenth century. The canvas is lined with linen, stretched over thin board and measures 13 1/4 X 19 1/8 inches. This work has been extensively exhibited. Bidding for this piece will begin at $30,000.

Lot 57, a portrait by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916),”Man Holding a Cigar.” The oil on canvas is signed at the lower right and measures 30 x 20 inches. This painting is included in the catalogue raisonne, “William Merritt Chase – Portraits in Oil”, p. 93 OP.179, by Ronald G. Pisano. Minimum bid for this work is $30,000.
