Clarke Auction Offers Russian and Judaic pieces, 17th C. Tapestries, Fine Art and Sculpture, Antiques and Decorative Arts

On Monday, May 17th at 6:00 pm, Clarke Auction will sell over 470 lots sourced from local estates throughout the Greater New York area.

Silver highlights include a Kalo Shop Caviar Set, Spratling, Tiffany, an enameled Russian Box, Judaica, an .800 Figure of Demeter, Gorham, Arts and Crafts, Edwardian English Sterling, Chinese Export, and pieces still being catalogued.

Antique and Traditional Furniture Highlights begin with a signed Henry Dasson Marble-Topped and Ormolu Table, an early Georgian Dressing Table, a Heavily Carved Tapestry-Upholstered Settee from the West Side brownstone; an 18th C. Paint-Decorated Slantfront Desk; Period Regency Sideboard and Drop-Leaf Table; 19th C. Secretaries, Desks, and Chests; a Berkey and Gay Dining Set; a 19th C. Louis XVI-style Marble-Topped End Table and other pieces being catalogued. Of special interest is a highly decorative painted and parcel gilt Chinoiserie dining suite. In addition, the remains of a collection of mint French and Italian carved decorative furniture removed from local storage will also be sold.

Fine art features selections of contemporary and listed American, European, and Mexican works from a noted Purchase NY collector, including images of Frida Kahlo; an oil on panel attributed to John Crome the Elder with a W.T Blodgett provenance; a pencil-signed Rauschenberg poster, 19th C.Sporting Oils; an 1897 exhibited watercolor by Robert Little; a large early portrait of a pretty child from Park Avenue, 19th C. oils in fine gilt frames from the West Side brownstone, African-American Watercolors by Nat Hayman, Judaic works including oils signed Steinhard and Rattner, box-lotted older oils, box-lotted signed prints, and a selection of Art and Decorative Bronzes.

Decorative Arts include an enameled and silver Russan lidded box, a collection of clocks includes a glass globular New Haven with glass diamonds, several gilt-bronze and marble French mantle clocks, and tall-case clocks; a collection of cold-painted Vienna bronzes; a large and colorful signed Schneider Ovington France vase; a superb Bronze, Plate, and Beveled Glass Decanter Set; Royal Worcester Vases; a large, possibly Sevres, Bronze-Mounted Jardiniere; a Royal Vienna Urn; and an estimated additional hundred decorative lots to be catalogued.

Lighting highlights are a five-foot French Giltwood and Painted-Decorated Figural Chandelier; a Sputnik-style Chanedlier; Five Matching Skeleton Chandeliers from Park Avenue; and a 19th C. Cut Crystal Chandelier. The sale also offers a large assortment of French Gilt-Bronze Sconces and Pairs of Lamps such as Paris Porcelain, Tole, Metal Palm Trees, Gesso on Wood Urns, Empire-Style Gilt-Metal Candelabra, and more.

Tapestries and Carpets include two 17th C. tapestries, one a nine by twelve foot Brussels-woven depiction of Hannibal and his army. In addition to the five tapestries, the sale features room-sized Persian carpets and smaller hand-woven wool and silk examples.

And the Doors such as a pair of 18th C. Leaded and Stained Glass Arch Form stored since the early 1970’s, and Six Pairs of Antique Eight-Panel French Doors.

We have now emptied our Jersey estate, but estates have poured in from all over the New York area, and their contents are still being catalogued this week,” said Ronan Clarke. “So I suspect that there will be last minute surprises on May 17th.”
