A picture by world renowned Welsh artist Sir Kyffin Williams has been discovered in a local property.
The 35cm by 48cm image in ink/wash by Sir John ‘Kyffin’ Williams (1918-2006) is titled ‘Carmel’. It shows a churchyard to the foreground with classic Welsh terraces and mountainous landscape beyond. Provenance with it states that it was No.40 in a special exhibition titled ‘Paintings and Drawings by Kyffin Williams ARA’ held at Tegfryn Gallery in 1973.
Williams KBE was a landscape painter who lived on the Island of Anglesey. Diagnosed with epilepsy in the 1940’s, his doctor advised him to take up art. He became one of the most popular artists in Wales with works taking inspiration form his homeland. He was appointed a member of the Royal Academy in 1974. His style was distinctive and influenced many of his contemporaries. Highly sought after by collectors today, his oils can fetch in excess of £40k.
Discovered amongst the contents of a Lichfield mansion cleared by Richard Winterton Auctioneers, it will appear in the 2nd/3rd March Fine Art & Collectors Sale. From the same source, an interesting letter from Kyffin expressing concern regarding the sale of Tunnicliffe drawings will also be included in the sale along with a collection of contemporary studio pottery.
Paintings, both traditional and modern are currently being invited for inclusion in the international March Fine Art Sale. Entries close mid February. Contact Adrian Rathbone, (Fine Arts Associate) at the Auctioneers on 01543 251081 or email [email protected]
