Several pieces of furniture designed by the Swiss sculptor and designer, Diego Giacometti (1902-1985), the younger brother of Alberto (1901-1966), are to be sold at Bonhams, New Bond Street, as part of its sale of Post War and Contemporary Art and Design on 13 April.
A stool, featuring a bronze frame and leather cushion, is expected to fetch £30,000 – 40,000. Entitled Tabouret en X, it was acquired directly from the artist by the previous vendor.
The highlight is a 1965 bronze and glass table, entitled Table Berceau, Seconde Version, which was acquired directly from the artist by the prolific editor and discerning art collector, Edmond Bomsel, who was a friend of the Giacomettis and a member of the ‘Compagnie de l’Art Brut’ alongside Jean Dubuffet, André Breton and Henri-Pierre Roché. Signed Diego, the table has attracted a pre-sale estimate of £70,000 – 90,000.
After the war, Diego’s brother, Alberto, largely abandoned his furniture work, however Diego continued with furniture design and his excellence is evident in this sale.
n addition to these important pieces of furniture, the sale includes two Diego Giacometti bronze models, Tête de Chevaland Tête de Lionne. Both dated 1975, they have been estimated at £5,000 – 8,000 and £4,000 – 6,000 respectively.
