On May 10, 2011, Bonhams will present 170 lots of stunning photography from famed artists Hiroshi Sugimoto, Edward Weston, Richard Misrach, Ansel Adams, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Garry Winogrand during its Fine Photographs auction in New York. This photographs sale will be simulcast in three cities—New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles—allowing room bidders from both coasts to take part.
Judith Eurich, the Director of Fine Prints & Photographs, proudly states: “We have an outstanding number of photographs by the most important photographers of the 20th century and we are particularly happy to have this be another three-city simulcast.”
The auction features several notable highlights, among them are two highly anticipated Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Colors of Shadow prints (est. $30,000-50,000). They are a prime example of the artist’s initial experimentation with pigment printing, used to illustrate bare geometric interior spaces, and they are the first of their type to be offered at auction.
Also, new to the auction market is Edward Weston’s abstract silver gelatin print, Model for Mould (est. $10,000-15,000). This print is an anomaly when compared to the other images of the same period, such as desert-scapes and nudes.
Additionally, four split-tone gelatin photographs by American photographer Richard Misrach will be offered. Images Ground/Sky (White Sands) and Plate 4, from Desert Night Series (est. $5,000-7,000) will make their auction market debut in this sale. These four haunting and revealing images are prime examples of the artist’s focus on photographing natural features, such as cactus and palm trees, in the night landscape during the early 1970s.
Other notable lots are Helmut Newton’s X-Ray of High Heeled Shoe and Cartier Bracelet (est. $15,000-20,000); Garry Winogrand’s Los Angeles (est. $10,000-15,000); Peter Beard’s Francis Bacon (est. $10,000-15,000); and Lee Friedlander’s New York City ($7,000-9,000).
