Furniture, Decorative Arts And Paintings Sale on June 23 to Close Bonhams New York Season

Bonhams New York will hold its final auction of the season, on June 23, entitled American and European Furniture, Decorative Arts and Paintings. Sourced from various private collectors, the auction’s contents offer a wider array of decorative objects from a diverse range of collecting fields.

Star lots in the sale come from a selection of important furniture executed by Herter Brothers, circa 1880. An important pair of American Aesthetic ivory-inlaid parcel-gilt maple side chairs commissioned for the Morgan residence in New York City are estimated at $70,000-90,000; while an important American Aesthetic painted and ebonized cabinet by the Herter Brothers, circa 1880, is valued at $50,000-80,000.

Elsewhere in the sale, 60 lots from a prominent ocean-front Southampton estate revealing an eclectic collecting taste will be sold without reserve. The focus of the estate offering centers around 17th and 18th century French furniture, along with Chinese and Continental ceramics.

An interesting porcelain addition to the auction is an English bocage figural group modeled as a seated couple in 18th century costume. This colorful lot dates from the 19th century and is the property of the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia and is being sold to benefit the Charles Knox Smith Art Acquisition Fund (est. $800-1,200).

Of note also is the wide array of attractive silver objects in the sale, including Russian and East European icons, and a fine selection of Chinese Export porcelain sourced from western private collections.
