Sale Also Features Pictures of Salvador Dali, Frank Sinatra and Courtney Love
Bonhams is to auction a number of iconic images of celebrities as part of its Photographs Sale on 17 November 2011. One of the highlights is a photograph of Kate Moss, taken at the end of a day’s shoot on a roof-top in Marrakech, Morocco in 1993 by Albert Watson. Estimated at £12,000 – 18,000, Watson has described this picture, part of a series, as “among the best pictures ever taken of her, and she said so as well recently.”
Other top lots featuring A-list celebrities include Terry O’Neill’s Brigitte Bardot, 1971 (estimate £4,000 – 6,000); Albert Watson’s Christy Turlington, 1990 (estimate £2,500 – 3,500); and Andre de Dienes’ Marilyn Monroe, Bel Air Hotel, 1952 (estimate £2,000 – 3,000).
Well-known faces in the sale also include Salvador Dali by Horst P. Horst (estimate £3,000 – 4,000); Courtney Love by David LaChapelle (estimate £7,000 – 9,000); and Frank Sinatra (with his bodyguards) by Terry O’Neill (estimate £6,000 – 8,000).
Elsewhere, the sale features an intimate portrait of Julia Jackson by British photography pioneer Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879), one of around fifty known portraits by Cameron of her niece, the earliest dating from 1864 (estimate £25,000 – 35,000); and the top lot, Robert Mapplethorpe’s spectacular Calla Lily, 1986 (estimate £30,000 – 50,000).
