Paintings by Stockport born artist Alan Lowndes to be auctioned at Bonhams

Five stunning paintings by the celebrated artist, Alan Lowndes will be offered for sale by Bonhams in the 20th Century British and Irish Art sale, taking place on the 30th May in London.

Lowndes was born in Heaton Norris a, suburb of Stockport in 1921. He was largely self- taught as an artist, but studied painting at night school after the war. He began to achieve success in the late 1950s and early 1960s with solo exhibitions in Manchester, London and New York. Today his work is represented in many public collections. Although known primarily for his scenes of northern life, Lowndes also spent time in St Ives, and was a close friend of many of the St Ives School artists.

Bonhams will be offering the following works by Alan Lowndes in the upcoming sale, exemplifying his skill of simplistic style and bright, contrasting colours :

Matthew Bradbury, Director of the 20th Century British and Irish Art Department comments, “Although previously overlooked as a follower of Lowry, works by Alan Lowndes have become increasingly popular within the last year. His following has grown, as well as his reputation and collector’s are paying high prices at auction.”
