About 1,500-2,000 lots will cross the block at the firm’s gallery facility in Oceanside, New York.
(OCEANSIDE, N.Y.) – Quarterback Len Dawson’s 1970 Super Bowl MVP game-worn jersey, an amazing collection of original Bill Baird marionettes and puppets, a derby worn by former President William Howard Taft, highly collectible occupational shaving mugs and more will be sold at a three-day auction slated for June 14-16 by Philip Weiss Auctions in Oceanside.

By the time the final consignment is logged, up to 2,000 quality, mostly fresh-to-the-market lots will be set to come under the gavel in the Thursday-through-Saturday sale. Also sold will be original comic strip art for The Phantom and Mandrake the Magician from the personal collection of creator Lee Falk, and original Frank Frazetta illustrations used in the Tarzan books.
The action will kick off on Thursday, June 14, at 2 p.m. (EST), with a session dedicated to toys, trains, toy soldiers, play sets and more. The Bill Baird marionettes and puppets, with a great provenance, will be sold that day, along with toy trains, featuring HO brass engines, Lionel, American Flyer, MTH and more, plus pressed steel trucks and tin lithographed character toys.
Toy soldiers will include examples by Britains, Courtenay, Mignot and more. Also offered will be a collection of vintage play sets, including Mark and many others, most in their original boxes. Internet bidding will be provided by Proxibid.com and phone and absentee bids will also be accepted. The Philip Weiss Auctions gallery is located at #1 Neil Court, Oceanside.
The sandwich day of the event – Friday, June 15, also beginning at 2 p.m. – will focus on sports, non-sports, comics and comic art. The Len Dawson 1970 Super Bowl jersey will be a star lot that day, as will the comic art from the Lee Falk collections (which come with certificates of authenticity) and eight Frank Frazetta Tarzan illustrations that will be sold ‘en bloc’ (as one lot).
Also sold June 15 will be two rare signed items by Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick (a program and a great photo), a 1952-53 World Championship Minnesota Lakers signed photo, a 1954-55 Terry Sawchuk Detroit Red Wings multi-signed goalie stick, a possible one-of-a-kind 1930s-era Jack Johnson boxing poster and a full collection of Mike Tyson unused boxing tickets.
Baseball items will include a nice grouping of PSA-graded Turkey Red Cabinet cards, T205 and T206 cards, a 1937 signed Babe Ruth check (“GH Ruth”), a 1954 Brooklyn Dodgers signed baseball, a ball signed by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, and balls single-signed by Satchel Paige, Tris Speaker, Roberto Clemente, Lefty Grove, Thurman Munson and Nellie Fox.
Speaking of Roberto Clemente, the late Pittsburgh Pirate whose life was cut short by a plane crash en route to earthquake survivors in Nicaragua after the 1972 season, expected in was an important two-page personal letter handwritten by the Hall of Famer with incredible graphic content. Non-sports cards will include complete sets, single wax boxes and unopened packs.
In addition to the Phantom and Mandrake comic art, another lot expected to generate tremendous interest is a rare first printing of the comic The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck (Wilson & Co., 1842). Other comic offerings will feature a pair of fresh-to-the-market Charles Schulz Peanuts daily strips, as well as examples from comic collecting’s Gold and Silver Ages.
Philip Weiss Auctions is proud to offer material from the estate of Olympian Roy E. Moore, considered the “father of gymnastics” in the U.S. and a five-time national champion on the side-horse (later renamed the pommel horse), from 1908-1913. Included will be clothing items worn during the 1932 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, a collection of official programs, photos, souvenir books and correspondence with his friend, baseball great Cy Young.
Rounding out the list of Friday’s expected top lots is a collection of 1950s Harlem Globetrotters programs, a sterling silver 1913 racing trophy won by the legendary jockey Vincent Powers (winner of the Kentucky Derby in 1909) made by J.H. Werner, Berlin Silversmiths, and a large scrapbook with photos and other items pertaining to Mr. Powers.
The 1909 derby worn by President Taft will be sold June 16, along with a U.S./Mexico medal showing Taft and the president of Mexico (both items will be sold as one lot). Also sold will the original brown leather band that was placed on the Cartier watch JFK was wearing on the date of his assassination, to replace the black leather band that was cut off that fateful day.
The very popular occupational shaving mugs will be headlined by the 30-year lifetime collection of Anise and Louis Alkin. Featured will be a one-of-a-kind Spirit of St. Louis mug, a one-of-a-kind Arvene Motel mug, some fabulous occupationals, fraternals and barber shop photos. Also, from a separate collection: a rare shaving mug showing a motorcycle with sidecar.
Military material will include a regulation Confederate officer’s uniform (for Capt. Charles A. Hawkins, 38th Georgia Volunteers), a Confederate jacket, an early 34-star United States flag and an early 38-star United States flag.
Also sold June 16 will be shorebirds and duck decoys by H.V. Shourds, two 5 inch by 7 inch Albert Einstein original glass plate photograph positives (one depicting Einstein with 1913 Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore and the other a wonderful head and shoulder portrait).
The circus memorabilia comes from a long-time circus employee and includes rare tokens, artifacts, books, photos, programs and more. The ballet items, all from a single estate, will include 19th and early 20th century ceramics, prints, photos, ephemera and much more.
