(INA, Ill.) – The single-owner lifetime collection of William “Bill” Dagg – a man who has accumulated thousands of items, mostly petroliana, toys, country store, farm and advertising memorabilia – will be sold the weekend of Sept. 14-16 by Matthews Auctions, LLC, based in Nokomis, Ill. The auction will be held at the facilities of the Southern Illinois Auction Company.
“Normally we feature several large estates or collections per sale, plus other individual items, but the Bill Dagg collection is so huge in size and scope there’s no way it could share the stage with anything else,” said Dan Matthews of Matthews Auctions, LLC. “All three days will be packed, plus we’ll have separate rings on Saturday and Sunday. It will be a spectacular sale.”
The toys in the sale will be sold on Sunday, Sept. 16. Offered will be a die-cast Corgi Batman rocket-firing Batmobile, new in the box and in great condition, rated 9.5 out of 10 (with the box rated 7.5), complete with nine rockets in the original paper bag (opened); and a pressed steel Structo True Value semi-truck and trailer, new in the box, rated 9.75, 21 inches in length.

A pair of toy soda delivery trucks should wow the crowd. One is a Japanese battery-op tin litho Coca-Cola delivery truck made by the Sanyo Company, new in the box and rated 9 (the box is rated 5 with some wear), 12 ½ inches long, in good working order; and a Marx Pepsi-Cola delivery truck, plastic, 10 ½ inches long, rated 9, in good condition and with nine cases of Pepsi.
Mr. Dagg is a resident of Wayne City, Ill., a town not far away from the auction itself, in southern Illinois. He has been a dedicated collector since he was a teenager. His current position in the furniture industry has allowed him to indulge his collections over the years. But he feels the time has come for him to share what he’s accumulated with other, like-minded collectors.
Mr. Matthews said by the time the final gavel comes down on Sunday, Sept. 16, as many as 5,000 items will have changed hands. For people unable to attend the event in person, Internet bidding will be facilitated by Proxibid.com, and phone and absentee bids will also be accepted. Ina is located in southern Illinois, about 50 miles southeast of St. Louis and near I-57 and I-64.
The action will kick off on Friday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m. (CST), with a session dedicated to coffee cans, cereal boxes and containers, tobacco tins, signs and advertising, beer and soda cans, quart oil cans and handy oiler – over 400 lots in all. A day-long preview will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Previews for the Saturday and Sunday sessions will be held from 8-9 a.m. on both days.
Featured on Friday will be a “Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco” counter-top lighted display with a picture of ‘40s screen legend Hedy Lamarr, complete with ten packs of Lucky Strikes cigarettes, wood and Masonite, in fine working order, rated 8.9 out of 10 for condition; and a Beech-Nut Chewing Tobacco single-sided porcelain sign, 11 inches by 22 inches, rated 8.
Also sold Friday will be a rare Price Albert (and Stud) Smoking Tobacco tin flange sign, rated 7.5, measuring 18 inches by 11 inches, with different advertisements on each side; and a Chesterfield Cigarettes porcelain door push, 9 inches by 4 inches and rated a respectable 8.5.
The Saturday, Sept. 15 session, stating at 9 a.m. (CST), will feature petroliana, soda, automobilia, hunting, outboard, country store, signs (including tin, porcelain and cardboard), globes and nearly 100 antique clocks – more than 500 lots, in addition to the items coming up for bid in the separate auction ring. Saturday has five items that could well be the sale’s top earners.
The first is a scarce Sinclair Aircraft double-sided porcelain sign with plane graphics, 48 inches in diameter, both sides rated 7.9 and each faded a bit, but a sign that’s hard to find in any condition. The second is a Super Chevrolet Service single-sided porcelain neon sign, rated 8.5, 42 inches by 48 inches, in working condition and with neon around the perimeter and the bowtie.
The third is a Studebaker Cars-Trucks single-sided neon die-cut porcelain sign mounted on a can, 88 inches by 33 inches by 6 inches, rated highly at 9+, in very good shape except for some minor chips around the edges. The fourth is a Mountain Dew papier-mâché store display showing a hillbilly holding a jug, rated 8, with cloth and plastic, 42 inches tall and in good shape.
The fifth expected headliner is a rare Campbell’s Condensed Vegetable Soup single-sided porcelain curved sign, 22 inches by 15 inches, rated 7, with some fading and chips in the field. Also sold will be a Goodyear Service Station die-cut porcelain flange sign with world-in-tire graphics, rated 8.9 with super gloss and color, 30 inches by 26 inches, an overall fine example.
Other Saturday lots will include a Ya-hoo! Mountain Dew (“It’ll tickle yore innards”) single-sided tin embossed sign with logo, rated 9, 18 inches by 35 inches; a ”Fresh Up With 7-Up” single-sided tin sign (“It Likes You”), with lady on the bottle logo, rated 9+ and dated 1951; a Remington Kleanbore cardboard display, rated 8.5, with damage that can be repaired, 36 inches by 29 inches; and a Maxwell House Coffee tin flange sign, 27 inches by 14 inches and rated 9.
The Sunday session (Sept. 16, also with a 9 a.m. start time, CST) will feature over 500 lots of farm collectibles (tractor, seed, animal and fertilizer), more petroliana and soda, toys and additional vintage clocks. Sold will be a green Allis-Chalmers Tractor Parts & Service double-sided porcelain sign, both sides rated 8.25, with super gloss and graphics; and a McCormick-Deering Service double-sided porcelain oval sign with radiator logo and both sides rated 8.
Also offered on Sunday will be a Planters Peanut counter-top display with a jar in good condition embossed with a metal lid, rated 8, 10 inches tall; a Prairie Farms Butter single-sided porcelain sign with great graphics, rated 7.75, 15 inches by 30 inches; a De Laval Authorized Agency porcelain flange sign, rated 8, 27 inches by 18 inches; and an Ebberts Wagons original single-sided tin sign (“In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree”), self-framed, 26 inches by 38 inches.
