Strongest Bidding In Over Six Months – Prices Up as HDH Bordeaux Index Turns Positive
(Chicago, IL) – Hart Davis Hart launched its Fall season with exceptional results on Saturday, September 15th at award-winning restaurant Tru in Chicago, selling 100% of the lots offered and achieving $3.45 million, above the pre-auction estimate of $2,297,970 to $3,429,640.02. There was a full house of bidders in the dining room, fueling energetic demand for wines in all categories. Buyers from across the country were in attendance, competing throughout the day with bidders participating on the internet and over the phone. Auction bidders represented 36 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, as well as Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
“This was the most energetic bidding we’ve seen in months. Hammer prices at this auction were stronger than recent results in Hong Kong and New York,” commented CEO Paul Hart.
Bordeaux prices increased with demand across vintages. Six bottles of 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild sold for $10,755 against an estimate of $6,000-$9,000.
Bidding was particularly heated for wines from top Burgundy estates such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. A case of 1999 La Tâche Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (6bs) commanded $23,900 against a pre-auction estimate of $13,000-$19,000. Bidding also soared above the high end of the estimate for three bottles of 2004 Montrachet Domaine de la Romanée-Conti that fetched $16,730 against a pre-auction estimate of $8,000–$12,000, while demand for top California and Italian wines rebounded consistently.
