LICHFIELD HAUL OF ANCIENT COINS UP FOR AUCTION AT RICHARD WINTERTON

Following in the footsteps of The Staffordshire Hoard, Lichfield has revealed an exceptional collection of over 800 Greek and Roman coins.

The collection represents a lifetime’s passion of a local gentleman and was discovered at a coin valuation day at Lichfield’s Auctioneers Richard Winterton last year.

Stephen Wrenn, Coin and Medal Consultant for the Auctioneers comments:

‘It is unique to be presented with such a fine and extensive collection of early Greek and Roman coinage. Highlights include a Tetrdrachm of Alexander the Great, a Metapontum Stater, Luceria Teruncius, Denarii of Mark Anthony, a large quantity of Roman moneyer issues, Denarius of Tiberius – the Tribute penny of the Bible, (St Matthew’s Gospel 22, 17-21. The gentleman had a real passion and knowledge of his subject and this shows in the diversity and quality of the collection which is going to attract international interest when it comes up for auction in February’.

The entire collection of over 400 Lots are being offered in a dedicated sale at Richard Winterton Auctioneers’ City Centre Salerooms on Wednesday 13th February at 4pm. Viewing is on the sale day from 11am and there will be live internet bidding facilities.
