Fine Asian Art Auction, June 13th, 7pm CST in Chiicago

CHICAGO – Imperial Auctioneers, will conduct an auction of Fine Chinese Jades, Paintings and Bronzes on Thursday, June 13th, 2013 beginning at 7PM CST.

June 13th BrochureHighlights of the auction include a fine and varied selection of both Antique and Contemporary Chinese paintings. Among the contemporary paintings is lot 44, a fine work from the hand of Wang Ming Ming (born 1952). Offered with a certificate from the artist the pre-sale estimate is $3,000-$5,000.

Another highlight from the contemporary paintings is lot 38, a fine Chinese painting by Ding Zhang (born 1917). Estimated at $2,500-$4,000 this painting was purchased directly from the artist in the 1980s. It is offered with both the artist’s certificate and a photograph of the artist with the painting.

There are also a number of scroll paintings signed by important 20th Century Chinese painters including Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, and Fu Baoshi and a good lithograph by the renowned artist Zao Wou-Ki. Part of a 1988 edition and numbered 270 out of 400 it has an estimate of $1,500-$2,500.

From a good selection of older paintings is lot 42C, a fine Chinese Painting attributed to Yun Shouping (1633-1690). Based on a floral theme this lovely painting was acquired by the family of the current owner in Shanghai in the 19th Century. It is estimated at $6,000-$9,000. Strong interest is also expected for lot 42A, a Chinese painting with numerous seal marks and signed Ding Guanpeng (1708-1771). Estimated at $6,000-$9,000 it depicts a meditating Buddha in a rocky landscape scene.

Jade is well represented with a variety of choices including a good selection of snuff bottles, jade bangles, white jade as well as other jades. Of particular interest is a fine and large green jade Guanyin statute (Lot 8A). Measuring about 8 inches in height, shown seated on a throne and framed by a mandorla this piece comes with provenance from Sotheby’s where it was purchased in 1970’s. The pre-sale estimate is $7,000-$10,000. Another set of lots expected to attract attention is 24, 29A and 29B which each have 3-6 quality jade bangles per lot. In a variety of color and designs including some dragon bangles the lots range in estimate from about $1,500-$3,000. Other interesting jade lots include a fine white jade scholar (lot 12, estimate: $2,000-$4,000); A large jade mythical beast carving (lot 10A, estimate: $1,500-$2,500); A fine celadon Jade Dragon inkstone (lot 16A, $4,000-$6,000); and a large white jade figure of Guanyin (Lot 14, estimate $2,000-$4,000).

Some of the other highlights of the auction include a massive rose-quartz Guanyin (lot 16). Measuring 21 inches in height and weighing about 60 LBS this finely carved piece is unusual for both it’s size and quality. From an important Canadian collection it is estimated at $5,000-$8,000 and is expected to draw considerable interest as is lot 48 a very finely carved Cinnabar charger with a Qianlong mark on the base. Desirable for both the quality of the carving and size (11.8 inches diameter) it is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

An Antique silver sheep signed Yu Tang Qing Wan (lot 51) is an interesting decorative object. Made of silver in the shape of a sheep decorated with Chinese coins the design work and detail is excellent. The pre-sale estimate is $2,000-$3,000.

A couple of very interesting porcelain items are noteworthy. Lot 50, a rare large pair of Export Porcelain dogs is a mirror pair of dogs each measuring 21 inches in height. This unusual offering displays the very high quality of workmanship in the fine pieces made for the export market. The pre-sale estimate is $10,000-$15,000. Another fine porcelain piece is a Ming Dynasty blue and white vase (lot 50A). Of ovoid form, the jar is painted with a scholar and servant in a landscape scene and is estimated at $5,000-$8,000.

Rounding out the auction is an offering of Antique Rhinoceros horn items, bronzes, shoushan stone carvings, jewelry and a silk dragon robe.
