Bonhams Contemporary Art auction to feature works by David Park, Edward Kienholz & Bruce Conner

Bonhams looks forward to fall with fine highlights of a David Park oil painting on board, Portrait of Imogen Cunningham, 1952 (est. $70,000-90,000) and a Bruce Conner mixed-media work, CHERRIES, 1960 (est. $40,000-60,000) in its Made In California: Contemporary Art auction, October 21 in Los Angeles and simulcast in San Francisco.

Bonhams is pleased to offer in the sale works from many esteemed private collections and notable U.S. institutions including property from the De Young Museum, San Francisco and an important Midwestern Institution. A large scale oil on canvas by Bay Area painter Paul Wonner, View from Russian Hill, San Francisco, 1962 (est. $70,000-90,000) will also be sold to benefit the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina. A Joan Brown oil on canvas, Portrait of a Watermelon, 1964 (est. $30,000-50,000) will be offered from the collection of the late lauded American sculptor Stephen De Staebler.

Highlights continue with such offerings as a mixed-media work by Edward Kienholz and Nancy Reddin, The Fandango Black, 1986 (est. $30,000-50,000); a Charles Arnoldi acrylic painting on canvas, Paloma, 1978 (est. $15,000-20,000); a large scale Billy Al Bengston painting, Skinny’s 21, 1969 (est. $40,000-60,000); and various other works by Judy Chicago, Larry Bell, Ronald Davis and John Register.

Nelson, Impressionist, Modern & Contemporary Art Department Specialist at Bonhams, says of the auction, “Following our highly successful spring auction, which set four world records and was over 90% sold, we are pleased to be offering a highly selective selection of works by many of California’s most esteemed contemporary artists, this fall.”
